I saw this delightful piece the other night on NBC news. I watched it with tears in my eyes. It so brought back the lovely music which Solmaria used to play. It made me recall the many evenings sitting around their apartment while Ezra tried to coax Sol to practice. (And the way that Kenia would try to seduce her to watch telenovelas instead!)
Either Ezra or I would drive Sol to her various violin teachers. I recall taking my father Fred along and seeing him cry while listening to the lovely music she could make. She had a natural talent and a passion for the music. I recall once after particularly strenuous urging by Ezra to begin her practice I saw tears in Sol's eyes. I asked her if Ezra's emphatic urging had made her cry. She shook her head and burst out: "No, DeeDee. it's Mozart! the music is so beautiful it makes me cry!"
When Kenia tried to take Sol to Spain to meet her lover, Ezra and I had already registered Sol for a lovely music camp for young girls that summer that friends of mine ran. Instead of going there Sol stayed in Wellesley and Kenia went to Spain for her tryst.
I just hope that Sol hasn't stopped playing where ever she is.
This is the camp she missed out on: Village Harmony
